Headdir is actually the name of BOTH a paragraph style and a character style. 

In the running head, it's the character style. In the story, it's the paragraph style. 

The script uses the character style to know which parts of the running head to replace with what it picks up from the paragraphs in the story. 

The Head1, Head2 stuff is all about dealing with cases where there's more than one instance of the paragraph style on a page. There are actually four cases to consider: 

The idea is that on any one page you have a first instance (Head1) and a last instance (Head2). If they're both present, then the script constructs <Head1> - <Head2>. If there's just one present, then it constructs <Head1>. 

Those are the two simple cases. I don't have time to look over the code to see exactly how I dealt with the other two cases (to complicate things, I wrote two versions but only posted one). The other cases are: 

No instances of the paragraph: use the most recent instance from a previous page. 

More than two instances: one script ignores the intermediate values, the other accumulates a multiple entry like: <Head1> - <Head2> -<Head3> 

I forget which one I posted. I think the former, but my client wanted the latter.
