Ole, 

Had a suspicion that you might be at the end of any tech support chain :-) Thanks for the swift response, but I have an answer. I had to go back to my DOS utilities to find it --- it was control characters.  

These files had been archived for 10 years or more, and back then I was using WordStar as my main WP, and Ventura publisher as my DTP program. Before placing then in ID I had written a utility to strip all the Ventura code (such as < B> for bold and <D> to return to roman). But some of the files must have been saved in Ventura, and it would have returned these files to the WP format, which for me was Wordstar. This operation would convert all the Ventura < B>s and <D>s to control-B (ASCII 2) which my utility was not looking for.  

It would appear that that the ID ASCII filter cannot understand control characters in an ASCII file. Of course it was just my bad luck that whenever the error came up and I replaced it with another file, it too had unstripped control characters in it. Strangely, the Wordstar soft return (ASCII 141) doesn't bother the filter. 

Is anything straightforward?
