Hi Ole, Thanks for replying so quickly. I have worked out a number of ways of doing this in ID, but what I'm trying to do is use existing software that produces tagged text files in the format 

<tag1>First par column 1...
 <tag2>First par column 2...
 <tag3>First par column 3...
 <tag1>Second par column 1...
 <tag2>Second par column 2...
 <tag3>Second par column 3...
 etc. 

This method of indenting left and right has the advantage of starting the second row of paragraphs at a point below the longest of the first row of paragraphs, and it works in line with other normal text above and below it. The method has proved itself over very many years as the best way of marking up text for newspaper work, simply because it is so easy to proofread on a line-by-line basis. Another advantage is that it does not involve tab characters, which, being invisible, invariably go missing or get screwed up somehow. 

I'll be delighted if you have something that I can include in a VB6 script (Windows, obviously).
