Susan, I think an en-dash would look too large to denote a negative number. If you don't want to or can't use the minus sign, the hyphen is probably your best choice, as long as it's flat and unmodulated in the font you're using (sometimes hyphens are sloped, which I think would look silly for a negative number). Some fonts use the same glyph for minus and hyphen. I would think that you'd want an en-dash to set the number ranges apart, though; a hyphen is usually pretty small and often means a compound when used in the flow of text. Or sometimes using the word "to" is clearer. For instance, if you had to set a number range from a negative to a positive, ie 10 to 10 C. Does that help any? Gene PS Ironically, when I look at my negative number example above, the hyphen looks too small, and the en-dash too large! And the font doesn't seem to have a seperate minus sign. So, the individual font has to be taken into account as well. I think in this case I would take the en-dash over the hyphen, but the dash and "1" need to be kerned. lmao!
