Marilyn: I disagree rather strongly that there "was no problem" before computers. For starters, a lot of people wanted to use fonts designed in other countries, and this frequently caused problems. Even within the same country, before the 1880s/1890s, in the USA, fonts didn't have a consistent baseline so you couldn't necessarily mix fonts from different foundries on the same line. Even after that, Monotype had their "art line" fonts with more room for descenders, which weren't baseline-compatible with other fonts. In general, things are a heck of a lot better in these regards than they have ever been in the last 500 years or so. Regards, Thomas Phinney Program Manager, Western Fonts Adobe Systems
