Typically "hardware" modems sit on Comm port 2 while "winmodems" use
comm4.

One way to find out if you have a hardware modem is open Control Panel,
click on the Modem icon, remove the modem that's currently installed and
then search for new hardware. If it's a hardware modem it will very
likely be picked up on Comm 2. If it's not then you're going to be going
shopping depending on just how bad you want to run Linux.
