monitor shuts down

I am trying to load RH6.
At the boot prompt I press <enter> or any of the other options to begin the
installation
and I get the message "loading" then the monitor goes into standby mode and
wilnot come back on.

I have a trident SVGA PCI video card and monitor.

I have tried changing the driver, and switching of the energy saving
features of the monitor,
but nothing seems to help.

has anyone else had similar problems, or do I need a new video card?
