Hard disk installation problems

I've installed Linux on several desktop systems, but this is my first
time installing on a laptop. Since it has no CD-ROM, and the NIC will
work under Linux but not for the install, I have to do a hard disk
install.

I have a FAT16 partition, to which I have copied the entire contents
of my Redhat 5.2 CD. Everything seems to go OK, except that it
doesn't. The first problem that I notice is that after it reads the
second disk ("supp" disk), it comes up with an error

unable to open usr/lib/rpmrc for reading: no such file or

It gets cut off, but "directory" wouldn't be a bad guess for last
word. Later, after it scans the directories on the FAT partition, it
tells me that "Comps was not version 0 as expected", and fails,
offering me the chance of retrying, going back, or moving around the
install with a menu, none of which do any good.

I tried to make another supp disk, but I can't get them to work
correctly now (I rawrite the supp.img file to a floppy, but the floppy
just stays blank?!!?). I have no idea what this is--I've used the
same CD-ROM for at least a dozen desktop installs, so it should be
fine.

Any suggestions are greately appreciated.
