Actually I have figured out what is wrong but my solution is not sufficient for my needs. I have made some free space for linux on my 2nd hard drive but the setup keeps telling me "BOOT PARTITION TOO BIG" - which is resolved by installing the linux root onto the same hard drive as win98. But I want to put it on my 2nd drive as my 1st is running out of space. Is there a solution for this?!?!?
