I am currently trying to teach my self Linux, from the book "Sam's Teach yourself Linux (Red Hat 5.0) in 24 hrs" I am haveing some difficulty with some of it's vague explanations of commands. Would anyone here be interested in answering (helping) a newbee...? For example, My book is vague about createing Alias's in the 'bashrc' file found under the /etc dir. it states that the Root user can make alias's in the /etc dir. but that normal users must create the alias's in their home dir. I did some experimenting and found that I actually needed to create a file named 'bashrc' in my /home dir for a normal user. The book stated that after adding some new alias's I needed to run the 'bash' shells 'source' command "source .bashrc" to use the newly created alias's. After createing the bashrc file in the /home dir for a normal user, my alias's worked. Could someone please expalin to me in english what the author is actually talking about. Does each user have a different 'bashrc' config file, and if that's true, does the Root user also have the capability to override those alias's by createing his/her own in the /etc dir...? Any help would be really appreaciated. I am really getting frustrated with this OS. Please email me at (laporte@pcpros.net) Thanks: Dave LaPorte.
