Couldn't you get the same effect from installing different versions of
proprietary operating systems? Where does "freedom", of the sort that
Linux offers, come into it?

Yeah, that kind of troubleshooting can actually be kind of fun if you're
under no time pressure and you can keep the right attitude about it.
