I'd recommend Mandrake 7.2. It's based on RedHat, is compiled for Pentium,
so it's a bit faster, and it defaults to KDE for the graphical desktop, for
which I have a personal preference. It KOffice and StarOffice, so you get
a high degree of Windows file compatibility, and it's fairly easy to
configure.

There used to be a distribution HOWTO that compared distributions. I just went to the linux documentation project site, which is the official source for these things, and it says that it was withdrawn by request of the author. It can still be found all over the 'net, though. For instance: ftp://ftp.uni-mannheim.de/systems/linux/mandrake/6.1/doc/HOWTO/Distribution- HOWTO. It was written in '99, so it's kinda old, but it's a start. good luck! Done the Mandrake Thang ..... Liked it to a point... usually where my dependancies got so balled up. Dude, Try Connectiva 6.0, from Brazil. They have integrated APT into rpm management .... which is good for those of us that don't have 16 hours a day to debug the stuff... They also have the mondo KDE2 desktop for those using a gui. Drake is ok, but like Red Hat is overated. Point is, the people who worked on Connectiva seem to have taken into account some very important ideas. One, for thier economic structure, Paying royalties to MS forever is dumb. Two, people really do not care what the run.... as long as it is stable, and upgradeable. Three, the install process is as easy as Caldera's or Drake, easier than RedHat and with apt running in the backround... for some odd reason... everything you install works.... provided you listen to it and install the dependacies.
