Linux not hanging on boot after installation

Hi,

I have installed Redhat 6.2 onto my Acer TravelMate 500T laptop. But
haven't managed to get it working. My problem is this:

1.) the installattion completes with no hassles
2.) after it re-boots to start up linux for the first time, it hangs after
    this line: 'apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flag 0x0f (Driver version1,9); give
me a
    general protection fault, and a stack dump is given as well as some
other hex
    codes

I have tired many stuffs to overcome this:

1.) using seperate partitions for, eg, /, /boot, /usr, /usr/local etc.
2.) using a single partition- / for the installation
3.) using the GUI and text installation
4.) Tried installing Mandrake Linux 6.0 (but the installation had trouble
     writing LILO to the MBR or the first sector of hda1.)

But yet sttill no luck. Here are my specs for the laptop:

->  233 mmx
-> 32mB Ram
-> 3G HD
-> 2mB NeoMagic graphic card
-> Yamaha sound card

Does anything have any suggestions, solutions or work arounds because I've
stucked! Have yet to try and install early version of redhat. Please direct
your assistances to my email address: minh@zeta.org.au or post a reply to
me.

Many thanxs for your help.

Regards, Minh =)

cannot speak towards the first problem, but my mandrake version was finiky with
the MBR too. (I now use Red Hat only because there are several O'Reilly books
on running red hat). To get around the problem with the hard drive in mandrake
use a win98 boot disk with fdisk, and remove all partions (makes the disk
totally un formatted and leaves no trace of microsoft crap) the install should
take. If you are doing dual boot, I cannot help, accept maybe use fdisk to
clear any partions in the area you will be putting linux, let linux 'fdisk' the
area. Mandrake has issues with removing/reconfiguring active microsoft written
partions. At least in the version I had (older than yours, Linux 6.1 mandrake
6.5.

I had a bunch of problems with Fdisk and redhat. It would reconize my linux
partition as an "extended dos partition" an absolutely refused to do anything with
it. I had to download another partitioning utility to nuke that partition.

There is also "fdisk /mbr" that will restore the MBR

For a Dual Boot, if you use M$ windows :( , you will have to install all of that
crap FIRST , then install linux. You can tell the install program to write LILO
to the MBR and it will pick up the M$ stuff too. If you don't install win first,
you won't be able to boot linux except off of a boot disk.

The most important thing is to make sure all of the partitions are GONE before you
start.

I'm running w95 and RH6.1 and it works fine for dual boot that way.

If your BIOS will support it, change it to boot from CD. That makes a RH install
quick & easy.

I'm still fairly new at RH, but it's WAAAAYYYYY better than the M$ crap!

Hope this helps......
