I might be getting too a head of myself with larning linux, but the more i can learn about Linux the better. I want to learn more about Samba, like what it does and how to get it working with windows and linux machines. Any ideas where i can go??? I looked for www.samba.org but i kept getting 404 errors. Thanks Sean

open a terminal or use text mode and then "man smb" (w/o quotes) . I have a small book (all 600pgs ish) called "Samba Black Book" Written by Dominic Baines and Published by Coriolis Open Press. It has TONS of info on samba and also comes with a CD in the back of it. Hope this helps Derek Sean wrote: > I might be getting too a head of myself with larning linux, but the more i > can learn about Linux the better. If your using GNOME as primary x session, there are a couple of great programs out there. The man pages are a good help (I use xman straight from the gnome desktop- not sure if it's RH specific utility). I've used Gnosamba (from Red Hat (RH) site in RPM form with great success on our intranet running windoze boxes for two way directory "mounting" (i.e save and read from either machine as if it was a local volume/network directory) Another great application is LinNeighborhood - now this is for you Linux box to browse SMB shared directory/drives and then mount them. GnoSamba is a GUI (gtk widgets) interface to the smb.conf file - very easy espcially if your just mucking around trying to get the feel for smb command line structure. LinNeighborhood is a god send for rapidly moving files back and forth between disparate boxes. My win xx machines see it as a network drive as does my RH 6.2 Linux box. you may want to try www.gnome.org and search the download section there for it. I can't recall exactly where I got it but most likely from www.redhat.com or the US mirored website http://us4.samba.org hope this helps Derek Whitten wrote in message <39945F32.2E578A59@uswest.net>... >open a terminal or use text mode and then "man smb" (w/o quotes) . There is also something called swat, if the portmapper has this port i think it is 901 set to swat, you can got ot your web browser in GNOME and type, your machines IP/name:901 and get the Samba java style web page configuration manager, I think this is common to all Samba versions, not just RH 6.2 (which is what I am running) This means you can configure Samba on your machines across a network (check security issues if your network is accessible by a broad band internet connection). You can add users and start/stop the samba dameons! Steve Stellmacher wrote: > If your using GNOME as primary x session, there are a couple of great > programs out there.
