It seems that the 3com external cable modem is not very happy with linux. I am running RedHat 6.1 w/ updated files. I have an Aopen (realtek chipset) NIC and an Linksys (tulip chipset), both 10/100 NIC cards. My cable provider is Charter Communications and the modem they gave me is the 3com external. It seems as though it will not communicate with my linux OS. I see the "packets" light flash every once in a while when I reconfigure my network settings, but for the most part it does not work. I can not do one thing on the internet. If I set up DHCP, eth0 does not enable at startup, if I hard code the information (IP/Default Gate, etc), eth0 enables, however http does not enable at startup. I tried testing the NIC cards, linux sees them alright and I can ping it from another computer, if I have it on a local network. The only problem it is having is basicly the 3com cable modem. I am out of options on this, will I basicly have to tell my cable provider to give me a new cablemodem or am I missing something? Please help

I had similar problems with my Cisco unit on @Home, until I discovered the "-h" parameter of dhcpcd. Try using that with the hostname that the cable modem folks gave you - they sometimes tie the dhcp lease to the hostname, so that if you do not use the correct hostname, or if you use dhcpcd without that parameter, it will not work. Also, if there was a particular NIC that the cable modem folks used when setting you up, try using that NIC instead of these other two. Some cable modem shops disallow traffic from any MAC address on your port *except* the MAC they used during the original installation. Finally, check the Cable Modem HOWTO at one of these fine locations - maybe someone else has already posted a solution there: www.linuxdoc.org metalab.unc.edu/Linux /usr/doc/HOWTO Good luck. Here's another option: When your modem first connects to the cable provider it reads in your mac address. This prevents you connecting another computer to the modem as easily as switching the ethernet cable from one system to another. This can be undone by removing power to your cable modem for approx. two minutes and then powering it back up. DHCP should work at that point also. Preferably, before powering down, if your modem is connected to a windows machine, go to run and enter winipcfg. Then select your ethernet card and choose release. Then power down. You can determine if this is the problem without doing anything by first connecting the modem to your linux box, with the static ip, and trying to ping an outside address. If you see the lights flashing try it transmitting but get no response then I would bet a beer this is your problem.
