I need help... I am a total Linux novice, but ready to jump in... I have a spare computer to start experimenting on... here's my first problem... it is a 486 with 16 meg, a cd rom and 400 meg of hard drive space.... loaded with a minimal install of win 95 most installations of Linux are bigger that that, and there are too many to choose from... Who can give me some good advise?? What flavor of Linux can I install on this box, with out having to go get a degree in computer science to understand all the technical ins and outs.... Thanks for the help... I rember feeling this stupid about 15 years ago when I bought my first pc.... here we go again!!

Well, because your hard drive and amount of RAM is small, i do not believe there is any version of linux that you may be able to install. You could install the RedHat server which takes 3oo + megs, but you do not get Xwindows or anything that will help you in understanding Linux. I would say go out and get at least 64mb of ram and at least a 2gb hdd. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Original Message <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< On 2/25/00, 8:50:03 PM, "Jeff Farris" <jfarris@cptelco.net> wrote regarding where do I start???: > I need help... The older versions require a lot less from your computer. You can get them from anywhere on the net. The problem is, you will need to do a lot more configuring of your own to get everything to work unless you have only very mainstream components in your system ( eg SB16 ). That is actually one of the major progressions of current Linux distributions - fairly easy graphical installation, automatic hardware detection and such. But with a 486 you don't need all those extra drivers. In the dim past ( the 386 -486 era ) you could install for instance Slackware Linux from floppy disks! Currently, I'm running SuSE Linux 6.2 and I think you will get far with this distribution and any other that will allow you to carefully select the software packages that you wish to install. You have to scrutinize. Even X-Windows is possible, just select a small window manager ( an older one ) and no useless X-servers ( a kind of graphics drivers ). With any luck, the installation will keep track of how much space your selection will require. And along the way, maybe you will still learn something about the ins and outs... greetz, Jeroen.
