Help!!!

We just got this ADSL and set up Linux Mandrake 7.2 but we can't get it
connected. I did the "adsl-setup". Then "adsl-start" and get a "time-out"
message. We are not sure but we may have an IRQ problem. What command can we
use to see the list of IRQs?

Is your modem syncing?

there are a few variables you need to take into effect here:
1) what kind of modem do you have?
2) do you use pppoe, pppoa, or static routing?
3) what version of rp-pppoe do you run?

here's a bit more detail, and how i've gotten several people running, even
though we don't technically support linux at all

1) modem: you need to know your dsl modem's internal IP, if it has one at
all. this is important if you run a pier-to-pier network(well, it was for
myself at home, and for a few others i've spoken to, but not everyone, you
know, YMMV)
2) is you are using pppoe, then read on. if not, i can't help you, cause
that's all i know how to do
3) if you are using rp-pppoe, then read on. first and foremost, make sure
you installed the pppoe daemon. next, if you are using the version that
came installed with 7.2, then stop. run: rpm -e rp-pppoe .get rid of that
shitty version. then, go to www.roaringpenguin.com and get the most recent
version of the rpm, but DO NOT install it yet. now, run netconf, and get
rid of the IP and all the info for your nic, but don't worry, we'll put it
back in a minute. run "ifconfig eth0 down" and then "ifconfig etho up" and
then "ifconfig". if your IP is still shown, you might just wanna go ahead
and reboot. anyway, make sure you have no active network connections. then
install the new rp-pppoe rpm. run adsl-setup, and then try to connect.
after that, put your IP back in and it should work. anyway, this is not
guaranteed, but i've gotten a LOT of people up with this, myself included.

i found a post about this at www.linuxnewbie.org its on page two of the
hardware discussions.

if you don't know how to comile a kernal (like me) its best to go get a
dsl/cable router from you local computer shop/office supply store.

unfortunately I do believe you will have to get an ethernet modem
no choice here, the modem that BS supports and provides is the
Alcatel Speed Touch Home The unfortunate part is that BS only
gives these modems out on Pro-installs. THEY DO NOT SHIP
ETHERNET MODEMS period no exceptions.... It can also be a frustrating
experience just getting bell south to ship a different modem... The reason
that
you will have to go with the ethernet modem is that the only software
bellsouth has for
linux is NTS Ethernet 300 a third party dialer... so you can authenticate
one way with
ethernet 300 download it from ftp.bellsouth.net.. call the help desk
at 888-321-2375 or it might be 877 I forget option 2 to get the password to
DOWNLOAD the SOFTWARE...
or you might say for the SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD. Since a pro install costs $150
if it were me
I would buy a modem off the internet for cheaper if i could find it. Bell
south does not want you to do that of course and they will not support a
modem bought elsewere but then that's not a big deal since we don't support
linux anyway
Be careful of one thing if you do buy a modem on your own since modems that
are like the Alcatel 1000 and
the alcatel speed touch home (the 2 modems supported by BS) are hard coded
no drivers to load you must be
carefull that the vpi vci for bellsouth is set to 8:35 many isp's use 0:35
and there for many modems are set
to this.... of you have any other questions about using bellsouth dsl post
them i'll answer them a better place to post for dsl specific q's is the
tech support news group fr bell south that you can get to on your bell south
news server...
side note:
no difference exsists AT ALL between pppoe and pppoa on the host side....
the only difference is in the manner inwhich
a node authenticates-- ppoe=thernet300 .... pppoa=Dial up Networking or RAS
dialer or I forget what the mac dialer is
called..... any linux customer is going to be pppoe it does not matter what
it sys you are in the bell south data base

of course it is a possible I suppose that you could find a router similar to
the Caymen 3220
to connect to Bell South DSL using linux if you are on a network...
I suppose it is also possible that if you search you may find a compatible
pci modem---
heck for all I know drivers for the 3com are floating around some where the
modem is known as and can be identified
at 3com by it's name the 3com HomeConnect pci

I've had my DSL with Bellsouth for a while now and I love it I get a good
stable connection at
around 800 kb down not bad considering I'm about 18,000 feet from the
central office...
the only problem I've had is on a rare occasion usualy after a bad storm...
I have to shut down and
unplug my modem for a minute than boot back up and I'm back on... no big
deal...

a happy BellSouth customer,
Gosh

In the recent past, it was noted that customer's whose computer won't support the internal PCI or external USB modem would get the
free Ethernet modem.

What kind of computer would that be? A Mac!

So, tell them you have a Mac.

I went the "My computer has no USB ports. My wife's laptop has no PCI
slots. I need an ethernet modem so I can switch between them." route.

that would work if only they shipped the alcatel speed touch home
an installer would come out first he would try a usb modem
if that won't work he will check for an open pci slot...
if the pci and usb both will not work an installer will then try the
ethernet modem
if you claim u have a mac atleast that would ensure the installer brings the
ethernet modem

..... or tell them that you have no USB, and your PCI slots
are full. Kind of stupid that BS makes you do a little dance when they
could just sell you the ethernet modem to begin with. People have less
issues with them as well.

Ahh. Maybe with a year contract on the modems, they don't mind giving up
the STH. Things that make you go hummm.

An old style bellsouth adsl connection that has kept it's ip for 1 1/2
years. It also works on anything that has a NIC & TCP

Has anyone been forcefully removed from a bridged connection yet?

unfortunately Bellsouth has allready started moving all Bridged customers
to be either pppoa or pppoe.... they said to me that they are doing becuase
people were stealing the service... disconnecting with billing and then
getting the helpdesk to register the mac address thus receiving free service

? This doesn't make sense to me. Service is provided through your DSL signal.
If you disconnect with billing, then they will cut off your signal, and poof! no
more service. Registering your MAC address will do you no good. It seems more
likely that they are only offering PPPoX because they feel it is more manageable
and flexible (though this is arguable).

i would not call it "forcefully" removed.... but i do know some people are upset
becuase they have to authnicate by using their username/password.

Is there anywhere that I can go to get more information about this? I've
had BS ADSL for almost 2 years now (from the moment the offerred in
Atlanta). I'm now on my 4th IP. The 3rd was for about 11 months, and was
only switched because I had to change the MAC adrs. I remember hearing the
tech guy be surprised that I was 'on a bridged connection' when he was
looking up my info. I really don't know anything about this pppox - but I
was very happy when I switched to Lunix to find out that I didn't have to
use it to connect....

Any info would be great!

TIA

I don't think the problem was with people cancelling billing after the fact, but rather doing a
Helpdesk DHCP registration w/o having done a Bellsouth.net account registration. E.g. Billing was
NEVER established from day 1.
