I'm running kernel 2.1.105 (with a few enhancements from Bill Hawes). You
should really look at www.linuxhq.com, and look at the 'Kernel Patches'
section for 2.1.x. This shows that 2.1.97 had some problems, so its
probably not your machine's fault that the compilation is fails (unless, of
course the compiler segfaults instead of giving up gracefully).

Anyway, AT LEAST patch your kernel source up to 2.1.98. In reality,
download 2.1.105 from "http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.1/". I
believe this has been out long enough to have been mirrored to
"ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/Linux/PEOPLE/Linus/v2.1/", which seems to be a LOT
faster. 2.1.105 shoudl be a pretty stable kernel considering that it is
mainly a bugfix release for 2.1.104. It compiled for me with no problems
at all.

I used gcc-2.7.2.3. I suspect that egcs-1.0.3 would work also, but I don't
think you want to UNINSTALL gcc-2.7.2.3 if you can keep both. (I don't use
Red Hat, so I'm not sure how the packages are set up). If you only need
the g++ libraries to run old programs, instead of for compiling new ones,
then egcs and gcc2.8.1 shouldn't cause any problem.....

good luck,
-BenRI
