Hi

I had a similar problem with a Soundblaster 16 Multi-CD soundcard. It
would work fine with either DOS or Windows 3.1 but not when I moved from
one to the other. The symptons where that if I had run Win3.1 and then
exited (not shelled out) to DOS, run a program (eg PKUNZIP 2.04 or a
generic turbo pascal .exe) then restarted windows, the soundcard wouldn't
run anymore. During the DOS session, I'd get crackles from the speakers.
Also when going back into Windows (2nd time) it would complain that the
soundcard interrupts weren't correct.

From memory, the SB16multiCD has software programmable interrupt settings
and these appeared to be getting swapped by something that was happening
during the DOS session. If the soundcard had incorrectly address decoding I
could imagine how this could occur - at least that's how I reconciled what
I was observing ...

How did I fix it - took the card back and got a SB16ASP (jumper settable
interrupt levels). Took it home plugged it in and it was fine - I didn't
change anything else - the SB16MCD was definitely suspect.

Just so as you don't blame the other hardware, it's an EliteGroup 4981
motherboard with a AMD 486DX4/100 CPU which had been running perfectly with
a thunderboard prior to this and since then with Win3.1, OS/2 Warp and now
Win95 all flawlessly (with the SB16ASP).

Hope this helps ...
Giovanni
