I guess in fact any correct implementation of TCP/IP asks for a
subnetmask.

He did not mean that subnetmasks are outdated, but classfull adressing
is.

Since CIDR (Classless InterDomain Routing) addresses are no longer a
class-A/B/C/D/E address, but you use a subnetmask to create a network
that suits you needs (resulting in less unused addresses).

Many people still refer to A/B/C classes, but often they mean /8, /16
or /24 (subnetmask resp. 255.0.0.0, 255.255.0.0 255.255.255.0)

However noone gets a full "old" class A range these days (1.0.0.0 -
126.0.0.0) - probably class B's won't even be given out.
