Think about the fact that the order to kill all male babies 2 years and
younger would indicate how long it had been since the birth of Jesus until
the arrival of the caravan.  These men thought that if they could
understand the signs in the sky to mean that some important event had
occurred then the locals would see it also.  That's why they went to the
local leader, and that is why this leader picked a time frame from which to
kill the children.  The gifts left by this group provided for the support
of the family while in exile in Egypt for 11 years.
