Conceivable... for some. I do agree that many, many people out there
are buying power they don't understand and have no use for whatsoever...
but comparing C64's to the PC's of its day is like apples and oranges..
C='s were for a different audience, the ones PC's couldn't realistically
hope to reel in in those days... I used a 128 for quite a while, before
that a 64, before that a VIC-20... but apart from games there is not one
thing I did on the commie that I wouldn't rather do on a CGA-equipped
XT. (Or better yet an SVGA-equipped 486 running a truly great OS) Why?
Standard standards, wider program selection, better hardware
compatibility... It's not much fun having to BUILD (or buy) an RS-232
interface for a non-standard-voltage serial port. It's much less fun
having to shop board after board looking for a terminal that supports
ANSI codes and Ymodem batch properly, without requiring ridiculous
payment to the author for the poorly coded piece of crap. Running the
commodore over the last few years I owned it was like trying to beat
blood out of a dead stone horse. Using it meant isolation from the
majority of the computing world and incompatibility with almost anything
truly worth running. It was fun while the games lasted. GEOS was slow
as hell and full of bugs, and we never did see that damn geo-publisher
128... <sigh>
