Heres a wild card possiblity, that disk was burnt in multple sessions
and has not been closed properly and/or the felt pen has damaged the
next session info.
This would account for not being able to revcover any tracks past
apparently damaged track.

Well I will feel for centre hub ridge on writable side of all disks and
inset disk with this side down, you can continue to inset disk in burner
and if burn fails then open burner and take CD out and turn it over.
If you think my method is purile then by all means you go with your more
mature method.

Because I always use coated disks for data (Kodak) so this minimises
chances of damage from felt tipped pens and sharpies, and I use CD pens
now.

If you have had one disk go bad I would check any important *data*
disks, especially disks made by same manufacturer.
Use CDR Identifer to check manufacturer

Free download.

It seems likely that disk damage by felt pens is mainly a result of poor
disks coatings being susceptible to felt pen ink penetration, it may
well be that the same pen will never affect disks with better coatings.
No hard evidence but obviously best not to take chances with data, with
music its not so important.
