Believe it or not, the most reliable software/hardware combo I have seen
for this task is the Geoport II and Apple Telecom 3.1.1 software!  I work
for Apple, and test a dial-up product.  So I have access to the full range
of current modem technology.  For auto-sensing, I would rate:

Geoport
GV Speakerphone
Prometheus MaxFax
Supra Suprasonic
USR

If you only wished to auto-sense voice/fax, without voice-mail
capabilities, NOTHING beats a plain GV Platinum with 2.6 software.

These are personal views, and I've never bench-marked or attempted to
quantify this particular function.  Just "seat-of-the-pants" true modem
geek interpretations!
