My company is just starting up a project in Cuba where we want to send daily e-mail progress reports from the location to our main office in London. We had an IT person out there last week but he was unable to get the modems to connect properly. I have spoken to the site myself dialling one of the three IDD lines we have had installed. The voice quality is quite good, but there is a big time-delay echo. I have experienced similar in the past on satellite lines that have not been running proper echo cancellation routines. Does anyone have a good modem set-up string that will handle this "echo". That seems to be the root cause of the problem. On my last trip to Cuba I was able to connect to an ISP in the UK without difficulty. This was in Havana, though, and the lines there do not suffer quite as bad an echo. Our new project site is in a much remoter area and I would think that the IDD lines we have had installed are routed through a less advanced central. Thanks in advance for any help. Andre'

In the first instance I'd suggest you see if you can establish a good fax connection over the same phone lines, preferably using fax machines rather than PCs with modems. This will give you some idea of how bad the situation is. I've had problems with fax connections with Cuba. If you just need to send progress reports, consider using an Internet Provider in Cuba, if available and communication is possible; or fax, if it works. It is possible to send binary data by fax at a pinch, though I don't know how reliable it is with really bad lines (it does have error- correcting capability). Best wishes, -- Michael Salem

Thanks for your suggestions. We are actually able to send and receive faxes from our Cuba site without many problems. This is what leads me to believe that our problem is related to modem set-up. The reason that I want e-mail connectivity is that I want to receive progress transaction files that are to be merged into a global database in London. We can access a national ISP in Havana from our Havana office, but not from our remote project site, not even via long distance connection. This may sound a bit odd, but that's the way it is in Cuba... Any other suggestions would be most welcome.
