Hi, Can Anyone tell me if the internal USR X2 Winmodems are ISA or PCI cards? Cheers, Dominic -wouldn't the World be a better place without computers?!?!?!

ISA. I don't know of any PCI modems (yet) D wrote in message <01bd5cab$778c7a60$57e5989e@CENTRALL>... >Hi, >Can Anyone tell me if the internal USR X2 Winmodems are ISA or PCI cards? > >Cheers, > >Dominic > >-wouldn't the World be a better place without computers?!?!?! >

Very simple. An ISA slot card can be installed in *any* PC. A PCI slot card can only go in a PC with a PCI bus. This eliminates sales to those who don't have PCI bus slots, such as simple ISA motherboards, EISA and VESA bus systems. Larry

Only that for the miserable speed a modem needs it is a waste of
a fast PCi slot. Why not use a fast serial port and ext modem.
I prefer to see real LED's blinking myself.

One reason I've heard is that a modem doesn't need the strength of a PCI bus. When something has to be developed for a new bus, it costs money. It took a couple of years to work out how to make a PCI sound card. But with surround sound and the like, these are said to be worth it. Intel is making a move to get rid of the ISA bus by 1999 (ha) soI imagine we'll see some PCI modems in about 12 months... Graham Cooper wrote in message ... > >>ISA. I have one installed right now. http://www.aztech.com.sg/56kpci.htm Freed up a needed ISA slot. Works just fine. Got mine at www.onsale.com for $44 and $12 two-day shipping. no that not ture there is a EISA this used with very the Old Network Server they come 2, 4, 8 Port modem, VESA some go with this to but only come 2,4 port, you can Buy PCI Modem that if you got Big Bucks $$$$$$$$$ like Bill Gates Larry Mintz wrote in message <6fs86o$a90$1@news1.mnsinc.com>... >Graham Cooper (gray@gcelect.demon.co.uk) wrote: >: Can anyone tell me why there are no PCI modems yet? There is no need. However if you and 11 of your neighbors split a T1 on your block you will need a PCI type interface to handle the 64k comin down the line. BTW. hayes had a 16 bit card for their early 28.8 modems. Why waste a PCI slot on a 8 bit or 16 bit device > >I have one installed right now. http://www.aztech.com.sg/56kpci.htm >Freed up a needed ISA slot. Works just fine. One doesn't need a PCI bus just to lower processor overhead & in any case, just because it's a PCI device doesn't mean it's bus master or DMA or anything. For the record, I've got an intelligent ISA comms card here on my desk which I'm going to evaluate soon that contains a co-processor to handle all modem<>UART communications & transfer the result into memory by DMA. Theoretically it should lower processor utilization and completely eliminate errors. I'm hoping that this will smooth out quake2 a little. I'll keep you posted. -- -------------- Ian Cass Network Systems Administrator Eaton-Williams Group WARNING - All views expressed above are my own and not those of my employer. You won't need a PCI card to handle 64kb/s - ISA network cards handle over a megabyte a second. If you're lucky. TB
