We are looking for an application that will enable us to update our software
package from the web to our client installations.
We have a software apllication that has some 100 + .exe files that are
updated regularly (up to 10 executables may change daily).
Our ideal solution would be for our customers to log in to our web site
where a process would search the customer's installation (whether on their
local PC or on their server) and check whether there are any new updates.
The customer would then have the option to download and install the updated
files automatically.
We have tried most of the commercially available install packages without
much success.
Additionally,we want the abilty to install in the server a new version of an
executable while it is already open by another user.
Back in the old days of DOS as soon as the EXE was loaded in memory it was
freed up and I could replace it any time (except when the EXE had overlays).
Now we have to tell the customer 'please close the executable so that I can
install new version' something which is not easy because the executable on
the server is open by about 20-30 users.
However when I initially installed my Delphi compiler the SETUP.EXE that was
executed was loaded into memory and released from the server. I could see
from my Novell and NT console that the SETUP.EXE was no longer in use.

How did these guys do it? Could it be because their SETUP.EXE was only 42K
and my EXE is 2MB?

A $100 reward is offered to anyone that can assist in finding a suitable
solution.

The setup.exe you refer to at the end of this post was probably just a
loader for another app. If it is sufficient that the apps should be updated
after they have restarted, copy them to another name, start the main app via
a loader, and copy the temp to the proper exe at this time.

As for the updating mechanism, I know that Wise do some kind of internet
updates. It could not be that difficult to write an ActiveX doing this
yourself, or?

And - keep your money. You don't want to set a bad example, do you?
