I personally use Mcafee AV which has excellent real time protection.
However, scanning is slow and best done when you are not in front
of the 'puter. A lot of people complain that it is a hog on resources but
compared to Norton, it uses considerably less. I use the firewall as well
and no slowdown with opening programs. The only slowdown is when I first
startup windows, takes an extra minute on a Pentinum 4 3.07, 512 Ram.
With Mcafee, you get 12 months of updates and not just virus definitions but
program components too.
Haven't had any problems with the software but the initial update on my slow
56K connection took a little longer than an hour as the box copy was about a
year old...... ( mind you, it was the entire security suite I purchased )
Virus definitions updates come around every day and are automatic and quick
to download.

I used to use a combination of nod32, adwareplus & Zone Alarm Pro which took
up about the same resources.
