Extracting text from graphics files

G'day mates,

I'm just wondering if there is a convenient (and free) program for
extracting at least small amounts of text from a graphics file.

IrfanView can export to a wide range of formats, so that may give some
idea of available options that could be used (e.g. BMP, JPG, GIF... ).

Indeed, I guess at a basic level it would only need to extract the
text from the screen display, wouldn't it? Perhaps that's really the
only way it could work? Of course, the text to be "translated" would
be selected on screen by the operator, rather than hoping the program
could work on the whole damn image!

Any suggestions? It's not something that I want to spend money on,
but it could be useful at times to this slow typist!

Cheers, Phred.

No. Sorry the text is part of the graphic.

There is no "text" in a graphics file; what there is are pictures that
you choose to call text. In order to manipulate those pictures as
"text" you need an OCR (optical character recognition) program.

Yup. The text is now a graphic. As others have mentioned, OCR may fit
the bill. I've been using Abbyy's OCR v4.0 for about 6 months now.
It's quite good. From a posting by Susan Burgher back in June...

There's a lot of Italian involved but, wing it. By the end of the
process you'll at least be gesturing wildly like a native Roman...

Yeah. I was aware of that; I just wondered if there was a free one
kicking around that would be convenient to use for doing that sort of
job on one or another of the common graphics formats; with help from
the operator by delimiting the "text" area on screen, if necessary.

I guess you're saying OCRs will only work with the formats used by
mechanically scanned images; and/or there are no free ones?

Anyway, thanks for your interest, dadiOH.

Cheers, Phred.

Okay! So I have to withdraw my assumptions made minutes ago in
responding to dadiOH! :-)

Thanks for the pointers, Craig. Sounds like this might be worth
trying. I used to be able to nod like an Indian; arm waving will be a
new challenge. :-)

Cheers, Phred.

Addendum: I started the download and it told me to expect some 55 MB
coming down the wire, so I cancelled for the time being. I don't
think a program of that size would fit my "convenience" requirements
on this too-modestly configured system. (Win ME, 128K RAM.)

Cheers, Phred.

the free version 4.0 version was shipped in 1999
it is not so huge as you imagine
Finereader is very fast, quick and effective

the other free and open source OCR software I've found out are even tinier

Some consider webware a subgenre of freeware (pricelesswarehome has a
section for instance). Here is a good free webware OCR:

Now that's not *entirely* true.

The GIF format supports internal labels. Run GIMP and save as GIF,
you'll get the option to set a GIF comment (by default "Created
with The GIMP" but you can change it to anything).

There are also a few other XML or text based image formats that may
also have textual label fields.

But yeah, chanced are Phred just wants an OCR tool ;-).
