Plextor Issue

Please reply to this message back on email after deleting the .newsgroups,
as this is a multi-group posting.

My System Specs:

Windows 2000 SP2
A7V-133 Motherboard
128 MB SD-RAM
Athlon 1Ghz CPU
Plextor 16/10/40A CD-ROM Drive.

Problem:
Plextor CD-ROM Drive which is supposed to read at 40X, only reads at 12X.
Someone asked me to enable
DMA, but when i look a the Properties in the Device Manager, a Resource
Section where i can do that isn't
enabled. Does anyone have a fix for this. Also, worth noting is that before
i installed the Plextor Manager software
the CD-ROM Drive was running at 8X. The Write CDR Function runs at 16X btw.

Any help appreciated. (How to enable DMA, etc.)

Thank you.

What i am saying is that, There isn't a Settings Option there at all.
I could send you a Screenshoot or something, maybe..

There are three Tabs in the Properties:
General, Properties and Driver
General says Plextor CD-R PX-W1610A

"This Device is working properly".
Enable this Device, bla bla.

Properties has something about CD-Audio and enabling digital CD Audio for
this CD-ROM Device

This is on Windows 2000. Don't know how to enable DMA. Great CDR drive for
sure. :)

Um...no, I'm afraid that's not how we do it in the Windows 2000 world. If
you want to enable DMA on that drive in win2k here's how:

Get yourself to the device manager
Go to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
Go to (Primary or Secondary) IDE Channel, or whichever channel the plextor
is hooked up to
Click on Advanced settings
Under the 2 boxes for transfer mode, choose DMA if available
You might want to do the same for the other channel anyway, just to allow
DMA
Restart, and come back to this to confirm that DMA is enabled.

Same question posted yet again *& already answered above.

1. You've got a VIA driver installed for IDE. Remove it,
replace it with the standard MS driver that came with the OS.
Enable DMA, just like everyone has been telling you to do.

2. Re: 40x = learn what the various speed specs really mean,
then do your measuring. The spec for your drive does not say
that it reads every bit of all CDs at 40x. And, there's an
abbreviation there that you're ignoring, something like maybe 40x
CAV? Would it by chance have anything to do with where you're
reading on the disc? Like, might the read speed vary considerably
from the inside to the outside of the platter? Thimk.

I have a system with the same specs as you listed. When I had a
plextor 12/10/32 atapi drive I set the DMA in the bios.

FYI -
Motherboard "bus mastering drivers" affect DMA settings.
