HELP: HP Scanjet 4C problem

Dear people,

My HP Scanjet 4C flatbed scanner (SCSI-connection) has a communication
error. While all cables are connected correctly and the scanner is turned
on, I get the following message (translated from Dutch) in the
TWAIN-program:

Sorry, communication with your scanner is not possible.

Your scanner is being used by another application or is turned OFF. Close
the other application or put the scanner ON and restart DeskScan.
======================================
The scanner has fulfilled it's duty for about two years without any similar
problems. The scan software I use is: HP Deskscan II. I have downloaded a
new driver (SJ169DU) and installed once more, but without any positive
results.

HP helpdesk only gives support to people with scanners which are younger
than one year. Therefore they want to charge for call-help (converted) $ 25
(what of course doesn't garantee a solution).

Does someone heve any suggestions to solve this problem?
