Floppy drive cannot read High density floppies

A friend of mine has a 386 and he thinks he once could read HD floppies, but
he's not sure about it.
The only media that can be read id Double Density.  When trying to read High
density floppies, he gets the following message (or something like it): Disk
drive not ready.  He has DOS version unknown and Windows 3.1.

I believe he has a Double density drive only.  I'll check for the density
sensor and the jumpers.
Any other idea?  Well, I just think the obvious... Are his disk formatted?
