Installing used hard drive without formatting

Hello all,
I am having difficulty installing a second hard drive into my Win98 SE PC
that was
used in another machine.
I installed the drive using a 5.5 inch bay removable rack that I bought so
it could be easily removed.
I installed the drive and windows seemed to recognise it and asked me to
reboot due to configuration of new hardware, however now when booted it
doesn't show up as part of the system in My computer.

Do I need to use bios settings to let the system know what I have installed,
or should it have automatically detect it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as there are many pages dealing with
installing and formatting a drive, but apparently none dealing with
installing without formatting on the web.

hope someone can help.

thanks
Case
