I have been using my 336CX for about 6 months and it started out well - the scans were sparkling! However, over the past couple of weeks I have been getting vertical stripes or lines in the darker areas of the image. They are particularly noticeable if I use any kind of image adjustment to bring out detail, either within the Microtek Scan Wizard software, or using CorelScan/Corel Photo-Paint. The problem seems to be getting progressively worse. I have obviously cleaned the top surface of the glass thoroughly but this model does not seem to allow access to the underside. Has anyone else had the same problem? Obviously it's not much use at the moment and I'd be very grateful for any advice before I have to give it up and take it back to the store. Brian Cobley

I swapped the original unit with Microtek (an extremely lengthy and unpleasant adventure, I must say), and just received the new unit this morning. My user hooked it up (to a Mac G3, 128 MB RAM) and we have exactly the same problem we started with. These lines appear at regular intervals down the entire scan screen but ONLY when he uses the Unsharp Mask filter function in the scanner software. If he doesn't use that setting, but uses Photoshop's Unsharp Mask settings to achieve the same result, he get no lines. So do I get back on the merry-go-round with Microtek "tech support", or is the culprit my user? He's used computers before, you know, so he doesn't need help setting anything up. Thanks for the reply Jackie. I'll have another look at the way I adjust my images. Brian Cobley

Hello Brian All it takes to cause vertical lines is just a small amount of liquid to get under the calibration strip. Some glass cleaners will cause the very edge of the plastic underneath near the glass platten to shine during calibration. This in turn will not allow you to scan the full width of the bed without noticeable lighter vertical color bands on the far right and far left edge. As always, its better to spray the cloth and not the glass. And try not to get any on the plastic either. Of course, manufacturing defects could cause stripes too. One last point while I'm at it. Scanners should always be place on a hard level surface. If not they will conform to the irregularity and the scan image will be distorted. After all, they're mostly plastic shells. My 9600XL is solid but still will flex if not supported properly. Try this: Place a small photograph on the glass on the far left. Prescan. Now draw the marque box around the image. Scan. Now place the image on the far right and prescan. Simply drag the marque without resizing it over onto the prescanned image. Scan. Now look at both of the results. If your scanner isn't sitting flat as it should both images might look as if the upper and lower horizontal edges aren't parallel. Also. the second image might look as if you drew the box too small or too large after prescan. Sorry for the long winded stuff. I don't post to this group often so I figured I better say it all right now.
