G200 or Voodoo2?

Hi, I will buy myself a 3d card soon, and I'm wondering if I should get a Voodoo2 or a G200 card. I currently have a Millenium-II, so the G200 would replace that. I'm planning to get one with 12mb ram on it. I've been trying to find a comprehensive comparison of the two cards for gaming, but could't really find one. I would appreciate it if someone could put me on the right track. Cheers, Alex

So far from the benchmarks I've seen nothing beats a V2, even though the TNT comes mighty close. The G200 is pretty expensive isn't it? www.necx.com has a Creative Labs 8MB V2 for sale, $179 I think. I myself am still waiting for the Banshee... I imagine they'll be priced low considering they're an OEM product. Just gotta keep waiting. -dgenius Alex Le Heux wrote in message <35D3FE7D.543740A4@funk.org>... >Hi, > >I will buy myself a 3d card soon, and I'm wondering if I should get a >Voodoo2 or a G200 card. Over here they are cheaper than the Millennium II was, and they have all the 3D bits and bobs to!!!! A Voodoo 2 is twice as much as the 2D card again, although a G200 is kinda equivalent to a Voodoo 1.5 with worse support! Mark Taylor MRT@DSDLTD.CO.UK

Don't bother with the G200, I have one myself. It's a good card, but not
a lot better than the Millenium you already have. The Voodoo2 will give you
awesome speed as well as true OpenGL support right out of the box. I don't
know what kind of Processor you are running, but if you are running a K6-2
or P2 you really will see amazing frame rates over the G200.

Here in the UK, a Matrox Millennium G200 comes in at 89 +vat. A Voodoo II of same memory configuration comes in at around 140. Add to this the fac that Computer Shopper UK benchmarked the G200 faster than a Voodoo II and gave it their best buy award, I know which one I'm buying. The days of the standalone 3D card are numbered, as manufacturers push for a common standard, such as Direct3D or OpenGL, both of which the Millennium G200 supports. Voodoo II just has too much silicon to warrant it; combined with the image degradation its pass through cable adds, AND the take up of another PCI slot, it just doesn't add up. Millennium G200 is gonna knock all the crap ATI cards for six as well. I'm looking to see a review of PowerVR II, TNT and Savage first, though. Ethno

I have both a G200 and Voodoo2, there is absolutely NO comparison between
these two cards. If you are serious about gaming, get the Voodoo2, if you think
you MAY play a game or two once in a while, the G200 will suit you just fine.
The G200 is a little better than a Voodoo1, but does not compare to Voodoo2 in
terms of speed or picture quality, period.

The i740 benchmarked higher than a V2 as well, but that's only because it implements one little thing that games rarely use a lot better. In real-world tests, nothing beats a V2, and you're not going to be able to enjoy Glide with a G200. Make sure you find some frame-rate tests before you make a bad decision. The days of pass-through degradation are gone as well with the Canopus Witchdoctor, it makes the 3DFX signal pass through it, instead of vice versa. It doesn't use a pass through cable either, it has a ribbon cable that you connect inside the computer to the SLI connector. You are right in saying that the days of the stand-alone 3D card are numbered. As far as I know all the rest of 3DFX's projects will be 2D/3D solutions. The Banshee is going to be the first of these. I wouldn't buy a G200 because a lot of games have software support, and the only hardware acceleration is in Glide. -dgenius Ethno wrote in message <903118871.11901.0.nnrp-01.d4e4550d@news.demon.co.uk>... >Here in the UK, a Matrox Millennium G200 comes in at 89 +vat. Funny following up on my own post :) Thanks for all the responses. As the extra money for the Voodoo2 isn't really a problem, I think I'll go for a 3Dfx card. Cheerio, Alex

The Voodoo2 needs a 2D card and the G200 is one of the fastest 2D cards out there.

I have the both cards too: Motoracer 2 Demo runs good on the V2, but also good with the G200. No big differences or speed. (on a P2 400) It depend on the system you have. It depend also on the game: The Need for Speed III Demo doesn't run very fast with the G200. The game become dark, and slow.
