Have you checked out the DirectBeep family of functions from DirectX 6?
It's great!  Why would someone need a "int beep(int freq, int time)"
function when you can instantiate a whole bucketload of com objects to
do the same thing?  Amaze your friends!  Scare them away from a
programming job!  Make lots of money!
