my what a lot of crossposts! Sean Werkema (stw113@psu.edu) wrote: : >Hello, : >I do not usually cross post, so please forgive me. : Much as I hate to respond to a cross-post, I agree. This has always been a : pet-peeve of mine. When this industry started out, we could write virtually : anything we knew how to code. These days a certain Mr. Gates is planning to : tell us that we can't code anything at all unless it runs in Windows... : That ain't right. : So, to do my part, I will continue (as I have in the past) to boycott MS Win. : I won't code for it whenever humanly possible, much as I may be depriving : users of my software. I hope that other programmers out there will strongly : consider doing likewise, at least until Gates acknowledges that there IS : something else out there besides Windows. : And, until that date, I'm doing DOS and Linux. : Anybody with me, or do I flame in vain? yes. in theory. i am a uni student, i have linux on my machine, and have installed windows for nothing more than to try out wine and dosemu running windows. however, as a uni student there are assignments to be done and i find that windows is the most comfortable environment to be writing them up. windows IS an easy to use environment... if someone is going to be learning to use a computer then this is the environment i would recommend! and seriously... what is the alternative? the mac? i think not! not for me anyway. any computer system that can't run linux (yet) is not what i want. okay.... linux and all the other unix-type systems around the world have an incredible variety of FREE software available for them, indeed, you can have a linux system with all the software you could possibly need for development without paying a cent for the effort that has gone into those programs. in return, you can then write more programs and release them into the world without charging anything for them. [dream mode on] now if people started producing some good solid applications for windows that we didn't have to pay microsoft for, or indeed under the same ideals of linux and gnu.... don't have to pay anything for, then this would probably catch on... (perhaps this is already the case... i wouldn't really know :) i know that there is heaps and heaps of shareware out there for windows and such software is of pretty good quality ( i assume... i haven't used windows for anything other than word processing and solitaire in about a year :) but a lot of shareware is stuff that is nice to have around but would never actually pay money for! how much return do authors of shareware actually see? (this is not a rhetorical question or anything, i am really interested to know the statistics!) perhaps a port of gcc for writing windows programs would be a good start... or has this been done already too? unfortunately, the bottom line is that we still must obtain windows from somewhere, either by purchase, software bundled with the computer, or *other* methods... [dream mode off] hmmm...... no... on the other hand... [dream mode on] i will stay in dream mode for the time being :) bye james -- LOON
