It has nothing to do with Microsoft Products. Arc/Info from ESRI on our DECstation running Ultrix requires 200 megs of swap space. The arcedit binary alone consumes close to 50 megs of memory when run. This version 7.0 memory requirements is almost double from what it was at version 5.0 just 3 years ago. And this is under Unix, not on a PC. >People don't complaining to Microsoft about the memory requierements, >they are byuing the "needed" Memory complaining about the hardware >prices. As long as this happens nothing will change, why should it? I think that you will find that those programs which take up 50 Megs of RAM on todays computer do CONSIDERABLY more than their counterparts 15 years ago running on a 64K RAM system with a 180K floppy, or even 5 years ago with 1 meg of ram, and a 40 meg harddrive. The availability of storage space and raw speed has made it possible to do things that before would have never been considered. -- Steve Sheldon [These are my own opinions] '95 Dodge Neon Iowa State University ICSS Resource Facility by day '85 Honda Spree sheldon@iastate.edu ProMap by night '91 Bridgestone MB5 BEEF! -- Cause the west wasn't won on salad.
