Don't Buy Compaq (Unless You Feel Lucky)

Dear Readers,
I'm in the middle of a bad experience with a recent Compaq purchase.
I'm posting a) to encourage Compaq to settle with me and b) to provide
useful info to the rest of the world.
My primary complaint is with their service department. It is very
difficult to get a human on the phone at Compaq. Usually, you must leave a
voice mail message. In the event a human answers, average wait time runs 4
1/2 minutes.
The secondary complaint is software related: They have been unable
to get the bugs out of their "Compaq Phone Center." This causes fax/phone
answer failure, frequent crashes (or "comas" pertaining to their "Sleep
Mode"), and even glitches to Win95 desktop.
My new (less than 3 months old) Presario has been in the shop twice.
They have it now as I write. I just want my money back.
Other irritating details upon request. Please help me out. Help
yourself out. Don't buy Compaq.

Sound to me that you are just a little impatient 4.5 minutes waiting on hold
is very low from the past experience I have seen with tech support at other
places.

I just doubt if you are going to get your money back unless your state or
whatever has a lemon law on computers and I seriously doubt that. You have
only had the computer 3 months. You may have got a computer that was built
on someone's bad day. I am sure Compaq will get it fixed for you and that
is as much as you will get. In the repair shop 3 times in 3 months. I
would have taken it back where I purchased it if the first time broken was
anything really major.

I know of a couple people who have had less than desirable experience with
Compaq but persistence on the phone got the problems resolved. Whining
about it here will help you none. You need to be on the phone with Compaq
and let those people hear your problems with you Compaq.

I used Compaq at work and the only real issues where ones that we added
something to the machine and the machine was hard to convince that it could
get along with what ever we added. We always found the Compaq tech support
helpful though in getting our machine to work properly. Very seldom did we
see just failure of the machine to work, even right out of the box.
Good Luck
Jim
