I have a computer that is PC compatible with Windows 95 loaded. A new floppy drive was just added (A:) It works sometimes so it doesn't appear to be a hardware problem and it works in most all programs some of the time but it frequently freezes the computer when transferring files from the floppy to the hard drive or when reading from the floppy in programs like Wordperfect and several others. I checked the device manager and it said there were no conflicts. It didn't look as if any other device was trying to use the same IRQ. The new floppy drive was replacing a bad floppy drive. Anybody have any ideas what could be wrong.

Lucky, What driver are you using in the Device Manager? If you have the plain vanilla floppy drive, make sure you have the Standard Floppy Disk Controller driver installed. If all looks good there, you have a couple other possibilities. Check the ribbon cable and connections very close for nicks, bent pins, misaligned pins or what ever. Finally, check the power connector for a bad connection. If you are still fruitless, suspect a defective drive. Try a swap from another system or take the drive back to be tested. -- tnoc@email.com

I've had a simular experience with my 486dx33, and a sony CDrom before. It would lock up sometimes (in dos though) when transfering files from cd to hd. I have no idea what was up, but I do know that I found hitting the scroll lock key always clears the problem in dos. If the drive works ok in DOS, I bet you have a driver problem. Had a nearly similar problem, but when I changed to a new graphicscard, my floppy also works well. Check if you have the right driver to your card and monitor.
