It's a funny discussion!
In the south Italy we are "all doctors". If you are well dressed
and you have a fine car, then you will be called ... "DOTTO'".
No need of having finished ... grammar school!!
But the Italian language is much more exact than English with
ENGINEER. In fact we have two terms:

TECNICO: It is a generic engineer. Also the electrician is a
"Tecnico".

INGEGNERE: It is the graduate engineer by a university. Nobody else
can be called "ingegnere" by law.

I am sorry, anglo-saxon friends, maybe we are not clever at
engineering in Italy, but we are very clever at ... talking!!
