two computers connected together for the first time -Win98

Help ! I am stuck.

I have two computers and I have connected them together by means of an rj45
1metre cable. A PCI ethernet card ieee 802.3 10base2 and 10baseT at one
end, and an ISA 3com etherlinkIII at the other end.

I cannot get one computer to recognise the other. What am I doing wrong?
Is there any diagnostics can I run to try and solve the problem?

Could it be hardware or software? In control panel >system says they are
both working properly. BUT the Isa 3com slot card says that "the resources
this device is using do not match any of its known configurations. To
assign resources manually for this device - set config manually. NO
CONFLICTS" - Could that be something to do with the problem?

Do I have to change from my automatically registering IP address? (i.e. have
a static IP address)

I have set up the network configuration (probably wrong), and the computers
have been put in the same workgroup.

I am ICQ no. 20429729 if you want to help online, or I would be extremely
grateful for any help and advice.

Cheers

Hi,

Was is the OS ? NT or Win9x ?

If you connect 2 PC with RJ45 connector, you must use a HUB.

You can connect directly with BNC connector and one terminator (50ohm)
at each PC.

On Win9x use:
- NetBEUI protocole for LAN,
- Share Files/Printers

and share directories or your Hard Disk.

Are you a static IP for each PC on Internet ?

Regards,

Adrien

That's not true. You can connect 2 PC's together without a hub.
Use a crossover cable. That's what I'm using right now and it works just fine.
