I don't have any experience with the Matrox Millenium II but it is
supposed
to be one of the well supported cards. Your problems sound like you
might be 
having a problem with library incompatibilities or flakey hardware.

I'm currently running a Matrox G400 and it works well although you do
need
to use Xfree86 version 3.3.4 or later. I'm using 3.3.5.
