But how did you determine this? Maybe it's only a problem with X 
server (more likely, at first sight)? How about an upgrade (or 
maybe downgrade, if an older server would do a better job)? 

Matrox Cards are supposed to be the best supported and fastest ones, 
so I wouldn't rush to change it. I'd seek for the problem elsewhere. 

Do you use Gnome or KDE? What version? They are both known to be 
able to bring OS to its knees (and down to a flat horizontal 
position at times). Gnome seems to be more flaky these days.

Not a very precise description. What were you doing and using what 
tools? Again, what GUI was working?
