First let me start by saying excuse me for being so ignorant when it comes
to what I have to say.
I have installed Linux with no problems and it looks great, and yes I have a
lot to learn. BUT! Now that I have Linux as my only OS how do I Install
programs??? I have a CD with all kinds of great stuff that I would like to
load on to my new OS and don't know how to do it. I went to the bookstore
and looked at many books on how to install programs and there is nothing on
the subject at all. There is a lot on how to load Linux on to a computer,
but nothing on how to load a program once you have Linux on your pc.

Is it that hard? I have posted many times with no replies except for emails
that go something like this " Yea I want to know how to do that to but was
afraid to ask" " and when you find out please email me and let me know"
Is it really that hard? or is it that easy?
Please if you can help, please post the answers so more then just me can
know.

Thank you so much

As a novice myself, I have ran into this issue- there is no simple answer,
because there are several ways to install files. If the prog will allow, RPM
(Redhat Package Manager) will allow you to install Other programs are in
compressed format, and must be uncompressed before opening. Each program should
include a How To file which should answer this question on an individual basis.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

"Offical Red Hat 5.2 LINUX operating system Installation Guide"
I got it for $20 sans cd. I have 6.1 but found this book to be very
useful.

From RH, instructions on how to install RPM's
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/faqs/rhl_general_faq/FAQ-4.html#ss4.22

With RH (I have 6.1) and gnome I just right click (in the graphical
file mgr) on the file and choose install--for RPM's.

Also, gnorpm, was glint, works.

With a *.tar.gz just copy it to a tmp dir. Un-tar and un-zip it then
follow the INSTALL file's directions.

Get Corel's "Getting Started Guide" read ch 3. Seems you need to use
their "install" program.

http://linux.corel.com/products/linux_os/gsg_clos.pdf

Also get their server adminstration guide:

Well, here we use alot of Redhat and Mandrake Linux system, both of them uses
RPM's which is a packaged program. And usually, with the command "rpm -ivh
(program name)" would install the program in the correct directories, and "rpm
-F (program name)" for updating an older rpm package. To search your system to
see if a package is already install, use "rpm -qa | grep (program name)". Of
course, to uninstall the package use "rpm -e (program name)".

All of this could be done graphically using gnorpm or any other gui rpm
applications.

Ok, now if you're using a system that does not use rpm's then you must download
the source and compile it yourself so the program will be compatible with your
system. Usually, the source comes in *.tar.gz, so download it, then use "tar
-xvzf (file name)" to uncompress it into a directory, then read the INSTALL
file, if there is one. But most programs have a configure program, which is use
to determine your system's parameters before compiling and installing.

This is generally the steps, BUT IT DIFFERS FROM PROGRAM TO PROGRAM SO READ THE
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS.

1. untar the program source code - "tar -xvzf (filename)"
2. run the configure - "./configure" (ps. '--prefix= ' after configure is use
to specify the install directory, but usually you do not need to set that.
3. run make to compile the program - "make"
4. then install the program - "make install"

AGAIN, THOSE ARE JUST THE GENERAL STEPS, EACH PROGRAM REQUIRES DIFFERENT STEPS
TO COMPILE.

feel free to e-mail me, if you have any questions.

This not true. He could be using Debian or a Debian derivative in which
case he would install, upgrade, and remove packages using Debian's package
management system, which does everything RPM does and more. Even Slackware
has a primitive package management system. It is also possible to install
binaries from a tarball, so compilation is not necessary even without any
package management at all.
