I am having some trouble updating my video driver in Linux (Red Hat). I found that I was supposed to download xf41sav.tgz so I have done so. Then I tried to follow the instructions at http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html I copied the file from the zipped archive to /user/X11/R6/lib/modules/driver/savage_drv.o and overwrote the existing file of the same name. then when I rebooted I was forced to log on in text mode. then the screen would flash for a while then come up with an error message about X not working properly and that it would be deactivated for 5 min. I was never able to resolve the issue so I reinstalled Linux. Now I am stuck with my original problem which is an 'unsteady' display... If someone could point out a tutorial or something for new folks like me I would really appreciate it. Then I can continue trying to install and mess around with other things without a flickering screen... ------------Steve P.S. I have posted this message across 5 newsgroups. I heard that you are not supposed to post it across too many. Is that correct etiquette?

[..] You almost certainly should have looked for an RPM package file from Red Hat themselves. Installing things from tarballs is best not to do until you're ready to experiment. There are so many variables involved in something like X that I'm unsure where to start to help you... If you repost this problem: Take *accurate* details of all steps you did; Take *exact* copies of any error messages; Describe exactly what problems you see, rather than just interpretations like "unsteady". There is a document out there about how to write good bug reports which might be worth a quick look for you. Better luck next time!
