trouble with XFree86

I am having trouble with XFree86. According to Windows (which,
admittedly, is unreliable at best) I have an S3_Inc. Savage/IX w/MV. I have
installed RedHat 7.1 in it's own 3gig. partition on my Toshiba Satellite Pro
4300. When I first installed I was able to use the Gnome desktop but the
screen was unsteady (flickering when I would drag boxes etc.). Then it
started booting up in text mode and, not knowing how to fix this, I
reinstalled Linux. Again the desktop worked for a while then stopped. I
found out about an updated driver for my screen so I downloaded it and
replaced the file /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/savage_drv.o with the one I
downloaded as per the instructions at
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html#newbie. This made things worse and I
consequently reinstalled Linux. I still was unable to run X and I received a
message (error 2). Then I found out about XFree86 4.1.0 and
downloaded/installed the correct one for my system
(ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.1.0/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc22/). If
it is pertinent; I used cute FTP in binary mode to download the files. This
still didn't work and I received an error message. I tried copying the
savage_drv.o file that I had downloaded into the appropriate directory but I
got exactly the same error message, which you see below.

Thank you,

From this error message it seems to indicate that your XF86Config file is
not correctly set up. You will need some entries like the ones below, don't
copy these ones, they probably won't work for you!.

Since you are using XF86 v4.1.0 on RH your config file *should* be
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4, case is important.

Troy,

You said that the lines you suggested are for the X servers version >=
4.0. Will it matter that I have 4.1? Although I am quite well versed in
computing, I am still only 4 days old to Linux. I do know how to put those
lines into the config file with emacs so I will go and make the
modifications and let ya know...

It *should* work with 4.1, I don't imagin too many changes to config files
between 4.0.x and 4.1. Somewhere in the distribution for 4.1 that you
installed there should be an example config file, have a look for that and
see how you go.

IIRC with 4.x and later you can do startx --configure or something like
that and it will do a lot of the work for you.

Steve,
did you find a solution to your problem?
I have similar symptoms on my laptop; Toshiba Tecra 8100, RH7.1, XFree86
4.0.3, glibc 2.2.2, S3 Savage/MX w/MV 290.
The screen has "noise", sort of visual static, little flashed lines
whenever the display is updated in Linux.
I've tried searching around the internet, but your post is the nearest to
the symptoms I get.
I thought of updating to XFree86 4.1.0, but from your post it looks like
this might not help.

Any info or hints much appreciated.

TIA

Peter

Steve ...

1) are you running 'VMWare' on this install of RH?

2) what [utility] are you using to configure X/Gnome?

3) what primary mode are you trying to boot to
   (i.e. 640x480, 1024x768, ...)

It appears that the XFree86 libraries did not get fully installed. The
simplest way to resolve the problem for you is to re-install the
system. Red Hat's installer is capable of discovering your video
adapter (and usually your monitor) and setting it up for you - if you
choose an appropriate screen resolution and depth and TEST it before
clicking on "NEXT".

not saying you SHOULD know, but i saw something in
your log file: "(--) VMware Guest X Server" which
i thought rather strange. i wont be-labor what VMWare
is, but basically, you can run another OS within a
window of the host OS:

as a sort of "least common denominator", i run
"xf86config" - it might be that i come from the
"old school" :) the newer ones are 'cool', but if
you're running a laptop or newer hardware, sometimes
going "back" to tried and true can work.

sometimes it's good to get to 800x600 as a base (sort
of an LCD), unless you feel confident.

as mentioned by another, it looks like some
stuff is missing, but i cant pinpoint it ATM.

xf86config is strictly an XFree86-3.3.X utility and his video adapter
is not supported well in XFree86-3.3.X. It is supported in
XFree86-4.1.0 and that config utility will not help him one bit there.

Have you checked out the Canberra LUG?
If they can't help directly, perhaps they can suggest a specialist.

glad to hear you got it running! i always
suggest "starting small" (conservative) and
work your way up.

a terse example would be, if the install asks
if you want to boot into a GUI, dont do it
(at least initially). boot to text, then run
the GUI stuff to make sure everything is fine.
if it's a go, then you can change the parms.

slow-n-easy is the way to go.

Well, I have now tried to use # XFree86 -configure, but that won't run
either. I will copy the log file and paste it at the bottom of this message.
Most of what is in it is Dutch to me but perhaps it will shed some light on
my problem here. The advice I have been given previously is possibly correct
but as I have only been messing around with Linux for a few days, I don't
know how to "put the following lines into the X config file" or "add a
symbolic link to this driver file"... Would I be able to get rid of Red Hat

one. Does any one know where in Canberra (Australia) I could find a shop
that services Linux boxes? If not, I shall continue to stumble on...

I don't know what VMWare is. It sounds familiar and I assume I should know
but....

All I did to try to configure X/Gnome was to type XFree86 -configure -screen
name

I believe I am booting into 1024x768

Well, I have finally fixed the problem!!! That's always the way isn't
it? Just as you are at the end of your rope... The soultion seemed to be
just reinstalling it. Before I reinstalled, however, I formated the
partition again (for good measure). I also selected the generic S3 Savage
driver and let it use the resolution it chose by default. Why it worked
correctly this time and not the last times I don't know. I will not question
these things. I will just give thanks to the gods of binary that all my bits
have been ordered according to their supreme will...

Thank you for helping and trying to help yet another newbie...
