I am having problems getting my sound card to work. Its a PnP ISA CMI8330, pretty standard, but getting it to work under LINUX (RH6.2) is a problem. My resources are pretty much fully allocated under Windows, I have a ISA Modem, PCI Network Card, AGP Video, and the sound card. And I'm running 4 IDE Devices, which is obviously eating the DMA channels. Can someone please help? Even general info about allocating system resources, and resolving conflicts under LINUX would be a great help. Thanks.

Have you tired Redhat's "sndconfig" yet? For basic cards, even some PnP cards, RH gets things right. Otherwise, you'll need to download and configure "isapnptools." It's not hard to set up but it is kind of tedious. You run the included "pnpdump" which will dump a huge lisp-esque config file -- with none of your pnp cards enabled. You have to find the entry that you like based on allocated resources and uncomment it (I usually choose the one that is most like how Windows allocates resources for the card). When you're done save it as /etc/isapnp.conf and /etc/rc.d/rc.local is usually a good place to run "isapnp" at boot time. THEN read the sound-howto and find the correct module to install for your hopefully supported sound card. In your /etc/conf.modules, alias "sound" to that module and define all parameters specifying the resources (the parameters vary with the module). When you get it right, the sound drivers will load and unload automatically as needed. This whole procedure should be in the howto. Post and email (remove NO and SPAM) if you want more details for any of the above. Good luck! I've not tried it yet, but there are explicit instructions given in a patch for this soundchip at http://astr17pi.difi.unipi.it/v2.2/patch-2.2.10/linux_Documentation_sound_CMI8330.html My soundcard is on the motherboard and I'd rather try to get it going than buy and fit an extra card. RH's sndconfig was able to give me a way too fast version of the standard voice test file, but absolutely nothing for the midi file. I hope to get around to trying the patch this weekend... assignment rewrites permitting. See ya, Ken
