Is there any way to hide the linux partition (in this case d:) in Windows 98? A have a particular problem with Norton Antivirus and I wish to hide this partition in 98. Also, seeing as 98 can't read it anyway, there is no real need to see it. Regards Rangaj

Since Win98 can see the partition, you obviously installed to UMSDOS. Native Linux ext2 partitions are totally invisible under Windows. Best fix: Back up, wipe the partition, reformat as ext2 and reinstall. You get a performance boost that way. Second choice: What Artur suggested. There's something wrong with your installation. Two possibilities occur to me: 1) Your Linux partition type is mis-labeled. Use Linux's fdisk to change the partition type codes of all Linux partitions to 0x83 (Linux filesystems) or 0x82 (Linux swap). 2) You may have some unpartitioned space left on the hard disk that Windows is interpreting as a blank partition, or some sort of corruption in your partition table. -- Rod Smith smithrod@bellatlantic.net http://members.bellatlantic.net/~smithrod Author of _Special Edition Using Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux_, from Que

Maybe this is why?? Did you create primary or extended partition. The first time I use Parttion manager I created a primary partition and windows saw it, messed up drive letters too. Next install I did an extended partition and put linux there. Invisible. cheers. -- David Turley dturley@pobox.com http://www.binary.net/dturley Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

I have my linux installed as an extened partition(ext2) and htere is no way for Windows to see it. guess the sugestion or saving your stuff and repartitioning is good...the machine performance will increase. -karthik In article <80h4g1$ld0$1@nnrp1.deja.com>, David Turley <dturley@pobox.com> wrote: > In article <80grtd$j9p$1@the-fly.zip.com.au>, > "jbs" <julians@zip.com.au> wrote: > > I installed with Native Linux ext2 and Win98 sees my Linux partition > as > > well. I wonder why you state that only phat and winlinux support it. Heck, Slackware is the oldest, (and most stable IMHO) and comes with *2* UMDOS-based installs already configured. My windows 98 has absilutley no problem with the extended partition that holds my linux logical partitions. The linux stuff is totally invisible to windoze. -- David Turley dturley@pobox.com http://www.binary.net/dturley Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Well I had a look in fdisk(Windows98 boot disk). There is no drive letter assignment for my Linux partition. All it has is D(which is my Win 98 partition) and the size details of my Linux partition/s(no letter). By the way the reason Win98 is D is because I am running another HDD with NT on it (C,E) NT can't see my Linux partition, Fdisk can't either. I wonder why Win98 can???
