I have just set up a Lunux system using the slackware distribution. I installed the packages for the X windows system and I have run the configuration utility. When i type in startx, it comes up with the following message; FATAL SERVER ERROR NO VALID MODES FOUND GIVING UP XINIT: CONNECTION REFUSED (ERRNO 111) :UNABLE TO CONNECT TO X SERVER XINIT: NO SUCH PROCESS (ERRNO 3): SERVER ERROR I am using the following video hardware; Cirrus Logic cgld5422 Video memory = 1024 svga 800*600 any help would be appreciated !! Recheck your monitor settings for one, make sure you have the proper syncs as indicated by the vendor manual. I have an XF86Config for my laptop that uses a Cirrus logic chip - had alotta problems gettin it to work - persistance won the day ....

Try and setup XFree86 using the generic VGA server. You can do this by
typing "XF86Setup" as root.

Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies
the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry
penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more
careful about what they say if they had.

He was coming into Seattle airport through thick fog with less than 10m visibility when his instruments went out. So he began circling around looking for landmark. After an hour or so, he starts running pretty low on fuel and the passengers are getting very nervous. Finally, a small opening in the fog appears and he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. The pilot banks the plane around, rolls down the window and shouts to the guy "Hey, where am I? To this, the solitary office worker replies "You're in a plane." The pilot rolls up the window, executes a 275 degree turn and proceeds to execute a perfect blind landing on the runway of the airport 5 miles away. Just as the plane stops, so does the engine as the fuel has run out. The passengers are amazed and one asks how he did it. "Simple" replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away." > GIVING UP > > XINIT: CONNECTION REFUSED (ERRNO 111) :UNABLE TO CONNECT TO X SERVER > XINIT: NO SUCH PROCESS (ERRNO 3): SERVER ERROR > > I am using the following video hardware; > Cirrus Logic cgld5422 > Video memory = 1024 > svga 800*600 > > any help would be appreciated !! > > Scott > Scooter2@geocities.com

Edit the configuration file that the setup wrote (default is /etc/XF86Config) and comment out the "Clocks..." line. That should clear things up. (I had a cl542x at work for a while and had to figure that one out.) Of course, if you're not using XF86, then this doesn't really matter, now does it? That's what I did, and as I'll rarely be using X with the local server (have to swap disks to do that), standard VGA is fine for me. :-) ... It is time to get an upgrade card for your Linux box. ...Seeing that you are using a Cirrus Logic chipset, it is likely that you can only see 256 colors, rather than millions. The video memory is also not enough to support a reasonable frame rate. You should have at LEAST 2 MB dedicated to frame buffering, and another 2 MB dedicated to color conversion. Also, older cards, such as Opti cards, for example, which only come with 1 MB of video memory in the 930 series, have too slow of memory to deal with the video processing, despite if you had 4 MB of the old VRAM on the card, instead of two. In other words, more memory is not the solution, unless it is a faster type of memory. I have Rambus memory on mine, which is among the fastest that you can find, but I am plagued with the 356 color dilemma, because I have Cirrus Logic 5464 chipset. It is time now to move to the unreplacable Diamond Stealth series, such as the new generation of Diamond cards. Have fun, and spend more money! Even Creative Labs carries its own leprechauns, despite its excellent reputation in audio signal processors--pardon the Irish humor. The AWE64 is Gold in audio, but Creative Labs gets tin in the video market, concerning the Linux support. You just need to adjust your refesh rates/modelines and supported modes. remember to run xf86config before X, if you forgot. And Cirrus CAN display the millions of colors, i've done it myself. And the colormap does not take up VRAM. Could you please share your secret of getting millions of colors. May be this is well known. Can you point me to the right document for this? Thanks, Pranab

I ran a 5428, but only had enough vidmem for 16-bit color, but really, I see no reason to run at higher color depths except for professional graphics work (i can't even notice the difference). It depends how much video memory you have, but if you have enough, put a file in your home directory called .xserverrc that contains only X :0 --bpp 16 for 16-bit color or X :0 --bpp 32 for 32-bit color. (I think recent versions of Xfree suppport 24-bit, also). I think its --bpp, if not then its -bpp (can't check, running win right now). If you want it to always run in that mode no matter what user you are logged in as, there is /usr/X11/lib/X11/xserver/xserver.rc or something like that that can be edited to match the above. Provided you have enough video memory. -- Joseph Malicki jmalicki@bigfoot.com URL: <http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/4167/>

This displays nicely one of the things that is unfortunate about X; not only is there "more than one way to do things," there are *so many ways to do things that it's tough to explain why it does what it does.* There are entirely too many places where configuration can get read from... -- cbbrowne@hex.net, <http://www.hex.net/~cbbrowne/> Windows95, Word97, Excel95: With all the criticisms of Microsoft, at least they provide "best-before" dating on many of their products...
